Thoughts I (感遇·其一) by Zhang Jiuling (张九龄)

Orchid leaves in spring appear sumptuous
Osmanthus stems in autumn shine brightly
Exuberant is all this world’s life now
Matching the season, as is natural
Who could have known that mountain-perched hermits
Smell the wind in joy as they sit abreast?
The flowers and the trees have hearts as well
Why should one seek to cut off their beauty?
