The Governor of Yanmen Walks (雁門太守行) by Li He (李賀)

Black clouds pressured the city, which threatened to collapse
When armor shone in sunlight, like golden scales revealed
Sounds of horns filled the sky, autumnal colors within
In the pass, soldier’s rouge congeals into night’s purple
Half-furled is the red banner, as the shore is approached
Snow falls heavy, drums muffled in the cold without swell
Repay imperial grace, said on the Golden Stage
Wield the Jade Dragon, fight to the death for the monarch

Original Text
黑雲壓城城欲摧,甲光向日金鱗開。
角聲滿天秋色裏,塞上燕脂凝夜紫。
半卷紅旗臨易水,霜重鼓寒聲不起。
報君黃金台上意,提攜玉龍為君死!

Translator’s Notes
‘Soldier’s rouge’ is blood, just so we’re all clear.
