Cry of the Ospreys (关雎)

Crying are the ospreys, on a river’s islet.
A graceful, kind maiden; the noble’s perfect match.

Uneven waterwhite, flowing off left and right.
A graceful, kind maiden; sought for in wake and sleep.

Seeking, yet not finding, in wake and sleep brooding.
Longing and more longing, tossing and more turning.

Uneven waterwhite, picked away left and right.
A graceful, kind maiden; the qin’s sound resonates.

Uneven waterwhite, plucked nonstop left and right.
A graceful, kind maiden; bells and drums sing for her.
