Previous Life : Helian Yi

Memory was like a withered piece of wood filled with holes. It appeared like many things were getting absorbed into it, but in reality, time would swipe across it, and those invisible things were easy for one to forget. A human’s lifetime was longer than a morning shroom’s, longer than a cicada’s — they always walked their journeys, and got lost on them.

Only when they abruptly saw something would those years of recollections be stirred up and shaken out. Struck with the brand of old times, one’s thoughts would not stop.

Lord Seventh is, overall, a rather melancholic work. Suicidally valorous people, missed opportunities, wasted time and effort, obsession, mistakes that can’t be fixed, cruel deaths in the name of the greater good… if it weren’t for the main couple, there would be little true happiness here.

  1. Thank you for the amazing translation! I really appreciate all the hard work you’ve put into it. The relationship between Helian Yi and Beiyuan was a tragic tale of missed chances but ultimately very human. I really adored Wu Xi and I’m glad Beiyuan chose a happier road for himself.

  9. firstly thank you so much for your work Chichi, book is absolutely splendid and has been a marvel to behold!…theres a thought thats been in my head and reading this book has really re affirmed it for me.Be it Manhwa ,anime or even better beautiful books like this ,the Asian “heavens “always have a brutal way of dealing with who they will .And its done in the most magnificently brutal and painful way….Firstly the ending that Zhou Zhishu had…one would have thought that his punishment would the live by the sword die by the sword tone for all the people he killed in the name of the throne ,and probably by the Crown princes own hand …yet his retribution was even worse …He was murdered while he still lived…losing his one conscience and the person who he loved above all.And then there’s the King …if my supposition was not wrong our MC was his son , yet he let go of the one he loved and his life was absolutely meaningless for all he must have gained and he died alone with only the memory of a painting to keep him warm.Then theres the crown prince ,he loved the Lord seventh and was given seven lives with him and still killed him,and then that first life was revisited and he never got for once to have the joy of being told that he was loved by the one person who eclipsed his entire thoughts and blinkered how he saw the world…

    • Rather than that, I’d say it all comes down to human choices. They all had a choice, and when it boiled down, some chose right, some chose wrong and it’s all these little forks in life that brings us to where we are.

  11. Hey Chichi good morning! Now that Lord Seventh is done 😭 I’m starting to read Copper Coin Niches you recommended….. I know it’s completed…do you remember what site you found a good translation of it? I found one but it’s kinda all over the place and hard to get into…you liked it & it’s getting 5* any suggestions?.?. The other one I’m reading is The Revitalization of the Yiu Yao Sect which I really love…any help you can give me on the Copper Coin site is most appreciated…cannot wait to read your translation you’re working on!!   13. The novel leaves a bitter-sweet kind of feeling. It made me think that sometimes love is never enough (love was there but responsibility, fear, greed, arrogance and mistrust were present too), that fate is the outcome of people’s actions and choices we’ve made.

  14. As I’ve said before you are the best and truly this story and characters came to life so beautifully because of you.❤️…. I think this is a novel I will read many times because of what you put into it. When I saw that today you posted those very last words I immediately teared up for the end was in sight. I went back and read the 4 previous chapters before I read this last one. I couldn’t just read it by itself….I’m so glad to be able to follow you in what you’re translating because that will tell me it will be a great novel to read because if you’re translating it you loved it …..thanks again for the journey you took us on…❤️
    As a side note I wish the author had more of Jing & Wu Xi their love story was truly a great one ….

  15. I thought the last extra was the LAST one, but this was really needed! Helian Yi’s thoughts are Interesting… He wanted a Person Just like Jing Beiyuan but not exactly like him. And for What? After all those years, the one still seared into his mind is Jing Qi, not his replacement.
    I like Wu Xi’s past life’s wish was fulfilled. His mistake reaping the wrong soul was forgiven and he could even make happy the person he wronged.
    You’re right It’s not a happy novel, but at least these two People got to have a happy ending after all those years full of suffering.

  16. Translator, thank you for the hard work! I don’t like repeating myself but I think it’s worth mentioning: your translations are great. I know it’s not easy to translate historical novels, novels with many references, novels with poetic descriptions etc. And this one had everything. So, I really want to compliment your work.
    You are right. There was a continuous sense of melancholy in this story. After all, no matter how happily things ended, we know that would be changed quickly and the world would turn out as it was in the first chapter. Still, Mistress Priest has a way to write that makes even the most hurtful things beautiful.
    I consider Jing Qi fortunate, because he finally met someone who loved him enough to use his power for him and not against him. And Wu Xi, that little toxin, was strong enough to survive in a traitorous environment without changing himself for the worse. I always prefer it when couples can love each other while protecting the rest of the things that are important to them. Love should be about becoming better people together, not sacrificing everything to satisfy the other.

    • I can’t stop reading this particular extra. I love how Priest brought everything back into a full circle. How the first incarnation of Helian Yi realized too late that the person who he had in his heart was gone and it was all through his own doing. The karma brought about that when his second incarnation never truly had a chance with Jing Beiyuan and he must’ve quite coignizant of the fact of how Jing Beiyuan was now beyond his reach (but not why). Idk, this is the most beautiful “face slapping” I’ve ever seen. The only thing that would’ve sweetened the deal for me is if he knew what the other him did buuuuut maybe it’s for the best that Jing Beiyuan never did enlighten him that he once had a chance but he unknowingly squandered. Really really satisfying.

      Anyway, congratulations on the superb translation. Thank you for taking the time and effort of rendering this beautiful work of masterpiece into one that non-Chinese speakers can enjoy. I think this is now one of my favorite Chinese novels now. 🙂
